How many times have you walked away from strategy planning and thought “That’s the one! This is detailed and clear and they’re going to get it right!”, but then watched as it disappeared into thin air?
That is because strategy execution is not a strategy challenge. It is a human behaviour challenge.
To deliver the results desired, people need to be hyper aligned and laser-focused on the high impact actions that will drive the most important outcomes.
Unfortunately, even the best organisations have people who are misaligned, too broadly focused, and working with a multi-purpose mindset.
This is where as a leader, when delivering strategy and expecting your team to deliver the results, you must identify the people who are most essential to achieving the goal. Otherwise known as, high-impact people.
Once you have identified your key people, you must determine what each of them need to focus on. Hold 1:1 coaching sessions to maintain alignment, measure their contributions and identify areas of development/support needed.
If you walk away from the execution, and leave it all up to your team, expect little to no results. You should not need to hold their hands. You should influence, motivate and reassure.
So, the next time your strategy needs execution try following the above steps and watch the results flow in…
