Business leaders should study the history of leadership.
How can you know where you are going if you do not know where you have been?
The knowledge that someone else has experienced whatever challenge you are dealing with means there is someone out there with a lesson to teach.
As leaders, we need to understand that any situation calling for more information to make an educated decision can be found in history. Reading about the successes and failures of others is a crucial part of you becoming a leader.
Leadership has made the world what it is today. It moves us individually, it moves corporations, it moves the entire world. As our world changes and increases in complexity, we need a strong knowledge of the past to help us identify trends and cycles that we can apply to improve present events and prepare for a better future.
Leadership, just like any other skill has to be taught through its evolution. We have to understand the past and the present in order to succeed at the future.
I do not believe a history lesson is something you are likely to get in business school, so apply this to your personal development. Read the biographies of past leaders, read books based around historical events or researches and studies. Make it a priority for yourself to learn about the history of leadership, so that you can become the great leader of today and tomorrow.
