Evaluating your work environment

Evaluating your work environment

  • June 1, 2021

It’s important for us to know if our work environment is encouraging growth, or limiting it.

Your work environment doesn’t necessarily have to be ”toxic” to be bad for you.

When you’re evaluating and determining if it’s the right place for you to thrive, grow and succeed, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

  • Are you feeling continually challenged, or are you starting to feel bored and unfulfilled?
  • Is your focus always forward, or are you feeling as though you’re being held back from advancing?
  • Are your leaders role-modelling success? Are there people within your organisation you can learn from and be inspired by?
  • How often are you being pushed beyond your comfort zone to expand your way of thinking and gain new experiences?
  • How do you feel on a Monday morning? Are you excited to go to work, or dreading it?

This is also a great conversation for you to have with any employees who are perhaps in the wrong role, going in the wrong direction or considering leaving.
Challenge them to evaluate their work environment and how they contribute to making it better, or if it’s time to accept this probably isn’t the right job/career for them.

This is a 50/50 effort. Leaders have a duty to make our work environment as thriving, fulfilling and inspiring as possible – but it’s up to us to speak up when we feel this isn’t happening, and it’s up to us to try and change it.
