The number one top myth about leadership is the idea that leadership exists only in certain positions: If you’re a at the top, you’re a leader. If at the bottom, there’s no room for leadership.
In reality, leadership has absolutely nothing to do with position, and you don’t have to look very far to find examples of leadership (good and bad) at every level. The retail sales assistant organising a holiday charity drive for her fellow employees. That’s a leader. The CEO who pockets a bonus, then heads off for a holiday so she’s not around when the salary freeze is announced – Not so much.
So, the next time you see something typically labelled leadership, slow down and take a closer look.
And the best proof is not the leader’s personal success but the success of those who follow.
